Irony of the Indian Media

MEDIA is the fourth pillar of the Indian Constitution

Each pillar must act within its domain but not lose sight of the larger picture said the current vice-president "M. Venkaiah Naidu".

India is the world's most populous democracy with over 1.4B population. Freedom of the Press is legally protected by the Amendment to the Constitution of India. Still, Indian Media ranks 142 among 180 countries released by the 2020 WPFI (World Press Freedom Index) down 2 places from 2019. This isn't the first time we have witnessed such a downgrade in the ranking. Starting with rank 80 in 2002, 122 in 2010, and 131 in 2012 now we are at 142.

I am not here to accuse the media or to point out the Lows of Indian Media but to figure out why such a ranking and we are close in ranking to our neighbouring countries like Pakistan. On one side we have a Proud nation INDIA and we are close to a country Pak whose position at the world level is far worse.

I will not make any allegation but yes, I will definitely point out what normal citizens of the country think about the media. The tone, the graphics, the speed of the reporting, and the animation all seem too much fascinating but are we missing the main aim behind all this setup, good reporting.

One of the major allegations Indian media faces is that their aim is TRP more and least focus reporting in the right direction. Caste and religion are the main election theme in today's time where almost every leader aims caste and religion to get the highest votes. When it comes to media during elections there debates and polls too revolve around the caste and religion and main issues like development, jobs, security, etc lefts far behind. We want from the media to raise our voice while it becomes the voice of the election's propaganda.

It has been frequently seen that media is little biased towards the Party in Power. Nowadays there is a concept of remaking songs in political style and adding animation video to that like so sorry...But most of them are biased towards a party that does not suit a news channel viewed across the country.

Political parties makes an equal allegation to the media and the party in power, it may be a political statement but why media has given such a chance to any of the party, which shows that there are some plot holes in the press system. The whole reporting system in a country with such a big population revolves around politics and if some space is lefts it gets filled by Sports, Bollywood, and of course ADVERTISEMENT of whom-so-ever.

  1. There is an intense need to have serious drill on Indian Media. This is really good topic you have chosen, Ritesh. In upcoming blogs, you can also come up with actual examples of contradiction on issue by certain media. Good thread, Ritesh.
